Horn and Hardart began life as a small corner restaurant in Philadelphia, in 1888. Ten years later there were a half-dozen throughout the city.
In 1902 H&H opened the first Automat, where you dropped in a coin, opened a window and pulled out a delicious favorite dish.
New York got its first Automat ten years later, and they soon became a cultural icon.
Automats were featured in movies and song throughout the decades. In 2014, when The New York Public Library featured Horn and Hardart Automats in its Lunch Hour NYC exhibit, we saw that the Automat still facinates people young and old.
